AUS Awareness Day: Empowering engagement and social responsibility
Through a series of activities and workshops designed to empower American University of Sharjah (AUS) students as informed global citizens, the Community Service and Outreach (CSO) division of the AUS Office of Student Affairs collaborated with 19 governmental organizations to foster a culture of social responsibility and active engagement during its annual Awareness Day.
Students and members of the university community gained essential knowledge across various domains, including social welfare, environmental conservation, healthcare and beyond at the event
“Awareness Day is an invaluable occasion for our students to connect with various organizations, delving into opportunities for involvement. Beyond simply exploring what these organizations have on display, this event serves as a nexus for networking and learning. Through engaging conversations and interactive displays, students gain insights into societal issues but also cultivate valuable skills and connections. It's a moment of discovery and empowerment, as students explore pathways for meaningful engagement and community impact,” said Aisha Ali, CSO Manager at AUS.
Ahmed Helmy, a student in the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program, and Marwan Amr Abdallah, a computer engineering major, decided to take advantage of Awareness Day and donate blood. “Since my blood type is the universal donor, it is my duty to help those in need,” explained Helmy.
Abdallah also noted: “There are so many people in need of blood around the world. Being a healthy teen makes me want to donate for as long as I am able to. I was happy to have attended Awareness Day. There was a lot to see and learn and I am glad I was able to also do my part and donate blood.”
Participating organizations included UAE Red Crescent – Sharjah, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, Sharjah Charity International, Environment and Protected Areas Authority, Ministry of Health and Community Protection, The Big Heart Foundation, Supreme Council for Family Affairs- Health Promotion, Sharjah Social Empowerment Foundation, Sharjah Social Services, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Emirates Health Services, University Dental Hospital – College of Dental Medicine University of Sharjah, Human Appeal International -Ajman, Traffic Safety Section - Traffic Department (RTA) Dubai, Noor Dubai Foundation, Dubai Blood Donation Center, Sharjah Voluntary Center, Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, and Woman Union Association.
